AI visibility is how often, accurately and favourably AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode mention, cite or recommend your brand to shoppers in Singapore. Measure it with a fixed set of buyer prompts plus Google’s and Bing’s AI reports. Improve it with consistent brand facts, answer-first pages, accurate product data and genuine third-party mentions.
Our guide to SEO vs AEO vs GEO covers the theory. This is the practical follow-up for beauty, wellness, lifestyle and F&B brands.
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is your brand’s presence inside AI-generated answers, not just in a list of links. It has three layers, so track each one separately.
| Layer | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mention | The answer names your brand | “Brands to consider include…” |
| Citation | The answer links to your site or a page about you as a source | A footnote or source card pointing to your product page |
| Recommendation | The answer actively suggests you for the shopper’s need | “For humid weather, X is a good pick because…” |
You can be cited without being recommended, or recommended with the wrong price. Accuracy matters as much as presence.
Why AI visibility matters for consumer brands in Singapore now
AI answers now shortlist products before shoppers click, and only shortlisted brands get considered. In Singapore this is already everyday search: Google launched AI Mode here in English on 25 August 2025 (HardwareZone, 2025; Tech Edition, 2025).
OpenAI says ChatGPT chooses which products to show based on the shopper’s intent and context, structured metadata such as price and product descriptions, reviews and other third-party content (OpenAI). The good news: in 2026 Google and Microsoft added AI reports for site owners, and ChatGPT tags the visits it sends, so measurement relies less on guesswork.
How to measure AI visibility
Measure it with two kinds of evidence: what AI assistants actually say (a monthly prompt check) and what platforms report (first-party data).
Step 1: Build a fixed prompt set
Start with 10 to 15 questions customers really ask, in their own words, and grow to 20 to 30, across five types:
- Brand: “What is [your brand] known for?”
- Category: “Best mineral sunscreen for humid weather in Singapore”
- Comparison: “[Your brand] vs [competitor]”
- Problem: “How do I calm sensitive skin after a facial?”
- Local: “Halal-certified dessert café near Tanjong Pagar”
Add Malay, Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia, Thai or Vietnamese versions where you sell.
Step 2: Run it monthly and record the same fields
Run the set in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode, noting the date, engine, location and login status. For each answer, record:
| Field | What to note |
|---|---|
| Mentioned? | Yes or no |
| Position | Early, middle or late in the answer |
| Accuracy | Are price, outlets, ingredients and claims correct? |
| Sentiment | Positive, neutral or negative |
| Competitors named | Which brands appeared instead of or alongside you |
| Sources cited | Which URLs the answer relied on |
Answers vary between runs, users and locations, so repeat key prompts and report counts (for example, “named in 6 of 25 prompts in Perplexity in October”) rather than a single “rank”. The sources column reveals which review sites, marketplaces, media and creators shape your category’s answers.
Step 3: Read the new first-party reports
- Google Search Console, Generative AI performance report. Available to all websites since 31 August 2026, it shows how often your URLs appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date (Google Search Central Blog, 2026; Search Console Help). It counts impressions only, with no clicks or queries.
- Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance. In public preview since February 2026, it shows which of your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries, how often, and sample “grounding queries” (Bing Webmaster Blog, 2026).
- Analytics referrals. ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto links it sends (OpenAI Publishers FAQ). Set up a custom channel that also captures claude.ai, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. - Paid trackers. Tools such as Profound, Semrush’s AI visibility reports or Ahrefs Brand Radar automate prompt checks at scale. Treat their scores as samples of AI answers, not rankings, and start with the free reports above.
Step 4: Ask your customers
Add “How did you hear about us?” to checkout, booking and enquiry forms, with “ChatGPT or another AI assistant” as an option. Watch branded search too.
How to improve AI visibility
Improve AI visibility as you would search visibility: be crawlable, consistent and worth citing. Google’s May 2026 guide says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, so good SEO remains the foundation (Google Search Central, 2026).
1. Make sure AI systems can reach you
For AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Search Console’s generative AI control defaults to “include” (Search Console Help); check nobody has switched it off. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode; it only limits use of your content for training and grounding in some of Google’s other AI systems, while Search is controlled through Googlebot (Google Search Central). OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI). OpenAI’s crawlers are set independently, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot for search while blocking GPTBot, which collects training data. Anthropic uses ClaudeBot to collect content that may be used for training, Claude-SearchBot to index content for search and Claude-User to fetch pages when people ask Claude a question; it says blocking either of the last two may reduce your visibility in Claude’s answers (Anthropic). Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot and notes some firewalls need explicit rules (Perplexity). Ask your host to confirm bot protection is not blocking them.
2. Make your brand facts unmistakable
Write one source-of-truth description (who you are, what you sell, for whom and where) and reuse it on your homepage, About page, organisation schema markup, Google Business Profile and Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop stores. Conflicting descriptions make it harder for AI systems to describe your brand correctly.
3. Publish answer-first, non-commodity pages
Open key pages with a direct one or two sentence answer, then detail. Google asks for “non-commodity” content: first-hand experience and a real point of view, not a summary of others. A routine built for Singapore humidity beats another generic “top 10 tips” post. Repurpose the same answers as short vertical video (see short-form video SEO).
4. Get your product data right
Google’s guide points brands to Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profile for product and local information. ChatGPT also draws on structured product metadata such as price and product descriptions (OpenAI Help Center). Keep prices, stock, variants and outlets accurate everywhere, including the marketplaces in our social commerce guide.
5. Earn genuine mentions
AI answers lean on what others say about you. Build a review routine, brief creators who already use your products (with proper disclosure) and pitch real stories to lifestyle media. Google warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem.
6. Add sources, quotations and specifics
In the GEO study by Aggarwal et al. (KDD 2024), adding citations, quotations and statistics raised visibility in generative answers on a lab benchmark, while keyword stuffing did not.
What not to spend money on yet
Skip tactics Google says do not help its AI features:
- llms.txt as a priority. It is unproven and not a ranking factor. Google says that for Google Search you can ignore llms.txt and other AI text files. Add one only as low-cost housekeeping.
- Tools that promise insider access. Google states that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.
- Mass-produced pages for every prompt variation. Google treats this as scaled content abuse.
- For the rest of what Google says you can skip, including special schema and content chunking, see our SEO vs AEO vs GEO guide.
A 30-day AI visibility starter plan
In 30 days you can set a baseline, fix brand facts, rewrite key pages and start earning mentions.
- Week 1: Build the prompt set, run the first check and save screenshots. Confirm Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools access; check robots.txt and bot protection.
- Week 2: Write your source-of-truth description and fix conflicts across your site, Google Business Profile and marketplaces.
- Week 3: Rewrite your three most important pages answer-first, with sourced facts and a short FAQ.
- Week 4: Start a review routine and one creator or media push. Re-run the prompt set and compare.
Then re-run the check monthly and log each change, so shifts in AI answers can be linked to the work behind them.
FAQ
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often, how accurately and how favourably AI assistants such as Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot mention, cite or recommend your brand. Track mentions, citations and recommendations separately, and check facts such as price and outlets.
How can I check whether ChatGPT recommends my brand?
Ask 20 to 30 real buyer questions in ChatGPT with search on, and in Claude, more than once and on a fixed monthly schedule. Record whether you are named, where you appear, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. Then check analytics for visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com.
Does Google Search Console report AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Yes. Since 31 August 2026, its Generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date for all websites. It does not show clicks or queries, so use it alongside the standard Performance report.
Should I block AI crawlers such as GPTBot or Google-Extended?
Only block what you mean to. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers, while GPTBot, which collects training data, can be blocked separately. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode. For Claude, allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User; ClaudeBot collects training data. Allow PerplexityBot if you want to appear in Perplexity, and check that your firewall is not blocking these crawlers.
Do reviews and creator content affect AI recommendations?
They can. OpenAI says ChatGPT considers reviews and third-party content when choosing products, and Google says its AI features can show what is said about products across blogs, videos and forums. Genuine reviews, disclosed creator content and media coverage give AI more reasons to mention you.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
It depends on the fix. OpenAI says robots.txt changes for its search crawler can take about 24 hours to register. Content, product data and reputation work takes longer, because pages must be recrawled and mentions must build up. Plan in quarters and measure monthly.
Why does ChatGPT get facts about my brand wrong?
AI assistants build answers from the pages they find, so outdated listings, old prices or conflicting descriptions on your site, marketplaces or review sites can surface as errors. Check which sources the answer cites, fix those pages first and keep one consistent brand description everywhere. Then re-run the same prompt a few weeks later.
